Is Laura Ikeji the Real Housewives of Lagos's Drama Queen?

Weeks ago, Showmax announced a Nigerian spin-off of the Real Housewives franchise that first aired on the 8th of April. The news came with some excitement from Nigerian reality show lovers who were psyched about all the gbas gbos they were expecting to see on their screens, in true Real Housewives style.

However, the announcement of the cast, which are Carolyna Hutchings, Chioma Ikokwu, Iyabo Ojo, Laura Ikeji,Mariam Timmer and Toyin Lawani-Adebayo, came with mixed feelings. Of the five, only three are married. So, Nigerians thought it wasn't a good representation of the show. I mean, it's titled "Real HOUSEWIVES…"

But just before we dive into Laura and drama, let's do some catching up. The Real Housewives of Lagos Season 1 is on its tenth episode, which aired on Friday, the 10th of June. In that episode, many of the cast members constantly referred to Laura as dramatic.

And then, after the show, I saw some tweets on Twitter. They insinuated that Laura isn't as dramatic as the other Real Housewives of Lagos say she is. I thought to myself, is she not? Are they right?

Let's find out by diving into some of Laura's supposed dramatic actions. But let's share enough to allow first-time RHOL readers in, okay?

  • In the first episode, Toyin hosted a launch party and invited all the girls except Mariam, who hadn't joined the show. At the party, Laura didn't engage in the conversations and didn't honour Iyabo's beach getaway invite because "she has a phobia for water and doesn't know Iyabo that well.”

  • Iyabo and Chioma go jogging soon after, and Iyabo gives Chioma this information. Laura had also said she'd have given Carolyna a dirty slap if she were there when she said those things. Iyabo also relayed this, and Chioma didn't like that Laura mentioned vawulence

  • At the next hang-out, which was Carolyna's -(and hangouts are how all the girls constantly end up in the same place, by the way) - the party scatters, FOR THE FIRST TIME. And this is most definitely the drama we signed up for, yeah?

  • Laura says she keeps hearing Carolyna say things about her sister, and she wasn't having any of it. Carolyna says Laura's sister, Linda Ikeji, ruined her marriage with "fake blog posts", so she will continue to say whatever she has to say.

  • Chioma and Laura continue to go back and forth, while Iyabo and Toyin try to ease the tension. Things were still a bit awkward, but for the most part, they succeeded.

  • All hangouts after that seemed pretty chill. Well, until it was Mariam's lunch. (Insert that trouble looming sound in horror movies).

  • Carolyna and Chioma arrived 5 hours late for this event. Yup! 5 hours. Iyabo scolds them for the tardiness deservedly, but Laura was vibing all through the night.

  • She had an attitude; said the party was boring; had her head on the table and constantly toyed with the food. Toyin tried to help her have more fun, but she was rude to Toyin. So Toyin said, “say no more.”

  • Fast forward now, okay? Chioma and Carolyna are going for outreach, and then they start seeing Laura's messages on their Whatsapp group page. Yeah, this is the beginning of the ultimate gbas gbos.

  • Laura complained about the tardiness and said some other not-so-nice things. So, Carolyna started dishing out the same medicine. She talked about seeing Laura being pimped to a governor. So, yup, they start going back and forth.

  • To resolve this fight, Iyabo calls all the girls together for a resolution meeting but well, that didn't go as planned.

  • The only thing that happened at that meeting was back-to-back insults, and many people had to hold Laura back from hitting Carolyna.
  • The other two or three hangouts after then were awkward for Laura. At Iyabo's daughter's birthday party, she moved from table to table and eventually had to lied so she could leave early. She also left Toyin's cultural party early, and Chioma claimed that to be when the real fun began.

Now, we're all caught up. In the last released episode, Laura kept going on in her confessional about how she feels left out and wants to be a part of the group. She tells the housewives the same thing and says she wants to have fun with the group. But the women seem to think she's dramatic and continue to let her be by herself.

And I use the word "let" very loosely. Because beyond causing fights, she was a down downer at almost all the parties, and that was rude and sometimes unnecessary. The other girls have just learnt to have fun without her. I think the girls should cut her some slack, though, and see what happens when they integrate her into their fun. But I understand that it isn't as easy as it sounds.

But what team are you on,

  • Team A - do you think Laura isn't as dramatic as all other cast members keep going on about?

  • Team B - Do you think she is, but the other women should be more gracious towards her since she's apologised?

  • Team C - Do you think she is as dramatic and the other girls should show her pepper too, no mercy?

Let me know in the comment section, and let's gist
